EJ and Abby’s torrid affair, starting on Smith Island in the Horton cabin to try to stop Abby from snooping into what happened to Nick at the riverside, is caught on audio recording by nosy hospital administration Anne Milbauer.
Anne, whose distaste for the Hortons borders on the obsessed, blackmails Abby into quitting her job at University Hospital in exchange for Anne’s silence. After Abby reveals Anne’s blackmail to EJ, he gaslights Anne, eventually convincing her to leave town or else suffer the consequences at his hands.
As EJ is convincing Anne to fly the coop, Abby is given a new job working on a special project for DiMera Enterprises by Sami, who is blissfully unaware of Abby and EJ’s affair.
On her first shift, a contractor who DiMera has hired to fix up the work area for the incoming staff at the former Titan TV, DiMera’s newest acquisition, leaves a ladder in a precarious position. The ladder falls on Abby, knocking her unconscious. EJ rushes Abby to the hospital, where Daniel reveals that Abby is pregnant.
EJ, desperate to keep Abby’s pregnancy a secret, as well as protect his unborn child, sends Abby off to Italy, under the guise of working on a project for DiMera Enterprises. Secretly, he’s planned to have Abby’s baby adopted privately to another family.
Upon Abby’s return, Sami shifts Abby to work for DiMera’s new TV station, and appoints Abby as assistant to Nicole Walker, the station’s top investigative reporter. The idea being to use her friend Abby's presence close to Nicole to keep tabs on Nicole.
Among her first assignments at WXIR is helping Nicole work on her exposé of Titan's controversial EnerNext project. While scoping out information on the protests against the project, Abby is smitten by the young, energetic leader of the Salem University protests, Jerome Grant. The two quickly begin dating, and Jerome assists Abby with her work for Nicole.
As everyone gears up for Nicole's TV special, Abby becomes increasingly distant with Jerome, being reminded of her ex-, Chad DiMera, and the baby she left behind in Italy.
The special airs, but is interrupted midway through by a stage light dropping on the stage, in an attempt on Nick Fallon's life. Luckily, no one is injured, but the investigation leads Hope to suspect that Jerome used Abigail to stage an "accident" in hopes of killing Nick.
As the special airs, EJ requests that Gabi Hernandez move into the Kiriakis mansion with Nick, in order to find any copies of the pictures implicating Sami, Kate, and Gabi in Nick's attempted drowning. He doesn't tell Gabi, however, about the pictures of him and Abby at Smith Island, and Gabi discovers them among the photos Percy took of Nick's attempted drowning. Gabi destroys the pictures of herself, Sami, and Kate trying to drown Nick, but holds onto those of EJ and Abby...just in case.
