Will Horton and Sonny Kiriakis announce their engagement, but their plans have been slowed down as their relationship becomes complicated and strained.

Will and Sonny continue to deal with the continued machinations of Nick Fallon, who is the ex-fiancé of Gabi Hernandez, with whom Will shares a child, young Ariana. Unfortunately, their perspectives on how exactly to deal with Nick clash frequently, with Will often taking Gabi’s side over Sonny’s.

The tension increases as Will takes a job with Titan Industries, Sonny’s great uncle’s company. Will would be working in PR for the controversial EnerNext oil sands project, which Sonny vehemently opposes, as do many others in town, including Nick.

In an effort to stop Will’s involvement with the project, and with Titan, Sonny sneaks over to the Kiriakis mansion and pleads with his uncle Victor Kiriakis to rescind Will’s job offer. Victor refuses, and Will quickly finds out about Sonny’s manipulations and puts Sonny out onto the sofa.

On Will’s first day on the job, he meets his boss, the handsome Alex. Smitten by his charismatic supervisor, the two are immediately drawn to each other. But Will soon discovers that Alex is not only Sonny’s brother, but also married to Noelle Curtis.

Will tries in vain to hide his attraction to Alex thereafter, and attempt to mend his relationship with Sonny, particularly as Sonny’s mother Adrienne senses something going on between Alex and Will. Will makes it clear to her that he is committed to Sonny, and they continue to plan their wedding.

When EJ, worried about the safety of Gabi and Arianna, gifts Gabi with a pistol, Sonny and Will have it out once again, before EJ convinces Sonny to accept the gift. Gabi decides to hide it in a desk drawer, safely out of Ari's reach.

However, when Nicole is given approval from Sami to run a TV special on the EnerNext scandal, Nicole pays Will a visit, supposedly to warn Will of the potential fallout from the special and the impact it may have on his career and family. But when Will leaves the room to check on Ari, Nicole immediately digs through his desk drawer and finds the gun.

Later, Alex and Will head to the Penthouse Grille, where Julie has prepared a preview dinner for them in preparation for the grand opening later in the week. Will and Alex will prepare PR shots and press previews for the high-end dining spot. As they finish their dinner, Maggie arrives, frustrated at the news that Nick has taken over Titan (and the Penthouse Grille as a result), and has moved himself and Gabi into the Kiriakis Mansion. Will is stunned by the news and angrily heads to the WXIR studio, where Nick is taping an interview with Nicole Walker.

At the taping, a stage light mysteriously falls on the stage mid-broadcast, nearly striking Nick on the head. After the accident, the broadcast ends, and Will drives Alex, Nick, Percy, and Anjelica home. On the trip back, Nick taunts Will about his close working relationship with Sonny's brother, which upsets Will further.
